Julius Werner Mausoleum

Just north of the church, through the graveyard, is an incredibly impressive mausoleum which is a listed building in its own right. It is the tomb of the family of Julius Wernher whose country pile, Luton Hoo (now a Hotel) is a mile or two up the road. German-born, at the time of his death in 1912 he  was one of the richest men in the United Kingdom with a fortune of £12 million ~ much of it made from diamond mines, and much of it spent during his lifetime, on art.

East Hyde Birding site

East Hyde Bridge, situated very close to our church, is one of the few easily accessible areas of water meadow along this stretch of the Upper Lea Valley.  The river Lea is the boundary between Bedfordshire (upstream) and Hertfordshire (downstream). The bridge, also known as "Ash bridge", first appears as 'Ackewoode  bridge' in 1565.  It is also the site of our Theophany Celebration; on January 6, after the Divine Liturgy, we walk to the bridge in procession and bless River Lea by dipping the Holy Cross into its stream.
